DSE science selection

Physics, Chemistry or Biology? A DSE science selection guide

All three require understanding, application and data analysis, but their everyday questions, mathematical use and content organisation differ. Use official frameworks and real tasks rather than labels.

Key points

  • Check the school's subjects, combinations, places and thresholds.
  • Read the HKEAA framework and samples for the relevant examination year.
  • Use real questions to test willingness to work with each kind of problem.
  • Verify university requirements on official programme pages.

A simplified comparison of problem orientation

Physics often connects models, quantitative relationships and explanations of phenomena. Chemistry moves among particles, reactions, calculations and experimental evidence. Biology organises systems, processes, terminology and data interpretation. These are orientations, not claims that one subject is only calculation or memorisation.

Do not ask only which subject is easiest

  • Read an official framework contents page and mark genuinely interesting and unfamiliar topics.
  • Try an introductory set in each subject and classify difficulty as concept, mathematics, terminology or data.
  • Ask current teachers about normal homework, practical work and assessment.
  • Check permitted combinations and subject-change arrangements.

How mathematical confidence should be considered

Physics and Chemistry use quantitative relationships, but performance is not formula substitution alone; models, units and assumptions matter. Biology also uses graphs, data and experimental design. If Mathematics is weaker, test the exact gap and willingness to repair it before excluding a subject.

Admissions requirements and preserving options

List two or three plausible directions and check required, preferred or weighted subjects on official programme pages, recording the date. When uncertain, prefer a sustainable combination that preserves genuinely plausible options rather than carrying excessive workload for a remote possibility.

When a trial or tutoring can help

A short trial can clarify content and question types, but no tutor should make the decision alone. After selection, if concepts, mathematical tools or answer communication remain difficult, bring real work for diagnosis and set a four-week retestable goal.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Physics require outstanding Mathematics?

Quantitative relationships matter, but so do concepts, models and explanation. Use introductory questions to identify the exact gap and whether it is repairable.

Is Biology only memorisation?

It requires terminology and content plus data analysis, system relationships and experimental contexts. Memorised sentences alone are insufficient.

Is taking all three sciences always better?

Subject load should reflect school provision, workload, ability, interest and pathways. More is not automatically more suitable or sustainable.
