DSE Mathematics study guide: Paper 1, Paper 2 and error analysis

Mathematics revision is not about recognising a worked answer. It is choosing a method without prompts, showing sound working and checking within time. Error classification and delayed retesting reveal far more than copying a solution on the same day.

Key points

  • Confirm Paper 1, Paper 2 and Extended Part requirements for your examination year.
  • Review method choice, setup, execution and checking for every important error.
  • Classify errors as concept, recognition, working, calculation or timing.
  • Retake representative questions after two days, one week and three weeks.

Understand the papers before allocating practice

In the 2027 framework, Compulsory Part Paper 1 uses conventional questions and carries 65%, while Paper 2 is multiple choice and carries 35%. M1 and M2 have separate assessment. Details can change, so use the HKEAA framework for your own year.

Paper 1 practice must develop clear setup, reasoning and partial-credit working. Paper 2 needs speed plus elimination, estimation, substitution and trap avoidance. Short questions alone do not prepare both demands.

Repair foundations in three layers

Layer one is concept: can you explain when a formula applies without copying the example? Layer two is recognition: without a chapter heading, can you select the right tools? Layer three is execution: can you set out the method, calculate accurately and test whether the result is sensible?

  • Start with three similar questions to confirm the basic method.
  • Then mix three questions so the method must be identified.
  • Finally complete a timed set and record time by question.

An error log should record decisions, not copied solutions

For each representative error, record the method you selected, the condition you missed, the correct first decision and the retest date. For calculation errors, specify whether the cause was sign, bracket, copying, calculator entry or rushed timing.

Understanding on the same day is not retention. Retake the question after two days, one week and three weeks. If a prompt is still needed, return to concept or recognition rather than copying again.

Timed practice and checking

Measure actual time by question type before setting a strategy. Checking is not merely repeating a calculator entry: use scale, units, substitution, graphs or special values. When stuck, write known information, the target and available relationships to secure valid working before following your planned skip decision.

What to examine in a Mathematics tutor

Ask the tutor to use one question to diagnose your faulty decision rather than only demonstrating the fastest solution. Foundation learners need clear steps and retesting; advanced learners need method comparison, rigorous communication and difficult mixed problems. Public-exam results help, but diagnosis of your thinking also matters.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should Mathematics revision consist only of past papers?

Past papers are valuable tests and integration practice. When concepts or question recognition are unstable, targeted sets should come first.

Is Paper 2 only about speed?

Speed matters, but elimination, estimation, substitution and trap recognition matter too. A fast wrong method is not stable performance.

Should I retake an error immediately?

Understand it immediately, then schedule delayed retakes to test whether you can solve it without short-term memory cues.
